November Salmon fishing

Fishing on Oregon's north Coast was good in October for Large Fall Chinooks! Anglers and guests fishing both the Tillamook Bay and Nehalem Bay/tidewater produced nice chinooks averaging 24-28 pounds with, for PFA a total of six over forty.

This is good as the large males will start coming in with the traditional rise of the rivers. Upper Tillamook bay was the place where Spinners in shallow water and Flatfish on the incoming tide was effective.

Nehalem Bay started as a spinner herring show and as the month moving forward we saw more and more fish caught on Bobbers/bait. Pautzke's Cured bait was awsome for both herring and eggs.

But as this is being posted we have rains in the forecast and expect the rivers to rise over the next week. This means we will be fishing both Tidewater and the upper bays systems as well as launching our drift boats on the Nehalem and Necanicum. We will see good Salmon fishing in both areas for the next five to six weeks.

We have a few dates available along with the crabbing on the Columbia River which will just get better each week.

To book a trip or get information on when and where to fish on your own contact as anytime. We also have good lodging packages available through out the winter.

We are also curretnly booking for three major seasons coming up.

Winter Steelhead on all north coast rivers December- April
Spring Chinook on the Columbia River March - May
Columbia River Sturgeon May-July Very busy season book early.

Day on the Nehalem with spinners

While the catching this weekend was not great the fishing was. We did bring in some great chinooks fresh from the ocean. A father and son team from Idaho took home forty plus pounds of fillets. Our Portland State connection lost a good Chinook at the boat and Coach Wally and Jim from ADT each landed perfect salmon.

While we love talking about our trip we want to speak about how we were fishing the spinners. New things we were trying. Spinners properly tied and fished at the right speed have always produced salmon. Fall chinooks are made crazy at times and cannot resist these spininng balls of color. What has always been missing is a good way to add another important eliment. Scent!

Many various sprays and rubs have been used with limited success. Sprays come off in a hurry and gel based applications are good for scent but make blades not bright or sticky. Unless cleaned and stored right they lead to the spinner going bad.

But recently I have been working with a metal scent tube. Various colors, sizes. At first I fished them below the blade by resucing the number of beads. These newly tied spinners caught fish at once. But at the end of each day the inside of the blade was always coated with the Gel and extra time was needed to clean up.

Last Friday evening I tied six with the scent body on top of the blade. Here is what I now had. The body loaded with Pautzke's Gel Krill now spun vs. being fixed. This in the water created more spin/motion, created a turbo noise with the water running thru the holes and made the scent trail largeer and more effective.

The fishing was slower the last three days Sat-Mon. But we had more hits and fish on then most. All of our fish were caught on the scent spinners. I fished three regular and two scent most of the time.

Check out the fish that almost swallowed this spinner!

If you want more information on the Scent Spinners or Pautzke's Gel Krill contact us.

Upcoming more tips on Fall Chinooks in tide water, drift boating and getting preped for Winter Steelhead.

Rains and Fall Chinooks

We are seeing good numbers of Fall Chinooks and coho in all coastal tide waters on the North Coast. This morning I have been working on gear for the weekend fishing the Nehalem and the numbers of both Chinooks and silvers rolling behind the house on the Necanicum.

Get your eggs-Shrimp and Sardines ready as we are in full swing for the large Fall Kings. Bobbers with bait are going to be the go to bait this next couples of weeks in all tide water fisheries. Flat fish, Brads Wobblers, Brads Spinners and Fatso's are going to also land quality fish.

The fall is one my favorite times for salmon fishing because it was how I started salmon fishing on the Chetco and Elk rivers many years ago. Something about the leaves turning, rivers rising and Salmon filling the rivers. No doubt deer and elk hunting mixed in make the fall on the Oregon Coast a special place to be.

No doubt it can be windy, rainy and alittle cold. But with the proper gear being comfortable in those awesome fall storms is no issue. Make sure you get out and take advantage of the seasons bounty. Remember success of the day is not how many fish are caught! Those are just bonuses.

Crabbing and clamming for razors is in full swing and we know that we are spoiled in the North West with such bounty. This next week we are having a small seafood fest to make the changing season. A few people will converge on our place and we will have Salmon, Sturgeon, tuna, elk meat, deer meat, razors and crab along with all the side dishes. Well we will just say all of you should organize a same type event rain or shine! Get your BBQ, Smoker etc. fired up and let the North West bounty be honored and consumed!!

Well need to get back to work and be ready for great Fall kings in the morning on the Nehaelm.

Good Morning:

Today's Bolg is about taking kids fishing! Fall is a great time to get kids outdoors fishing, Crabbing and clamming. It is important to ensure they have the proper clothing and equipment and if things are a little slow shorten the day alittle.

Kids love fishing, Clamming and Crabbing so maybe combine these activities when ever you can. Make sure that they are completely involved in the activity. Teach them how to do everything from rigging up, casting baiting etc.

Far to often I see people leaving their kids home on these great outdoor adventures. Make sure you help keep the heritage alive by getting your kids and their friends involved. Make a plan to get them out fitted and involved this fall!

If you need advice or suggestions please contact us and we'll help get them started. In our Guiding business we make discounts available for kids fishing to help make it affordable for family's to get kids started. We work hard yes to catch fish but even harder to involve the kids in the process to ensure they want to get out their on their own with friends and family.

As a member of Team GI Joe's I can say that most all team GI Joe's Guides do a great job getting kids involved.

Guides Note:

Today we are not fishing but a day for Preperations for the coming weeks Fall Chinook Fishing. Bait, Line, Reels, leaders etc. will all be prepared for the opportunity to get fresh fall kings to fifty pounds. This is an exciting time and it is best to get your gear ready.

With Fall Chinooks comes salmon eggs

Once that great fall chinook is landed check to see if it is a female! Now if you do not use eggs, need eggs or have a friend you will make very happy by giving them eggs then let her go to Spawn!!

But if your like me and use eggs daily for Salmon and Steelhead fishing then make sure you treat them with the upmost care. Follow the steps to ensure the best cured roe for your future fishing trips. Now before everyone starts in with their own methods just remember the most important thing! Do not let them go to waste! That is a crime and the fishign gods will not forget.

1. Bleed fish at once and remove eggs from fish into a plastic zip-lock bag.
2. Keep Cool but do not freeze.
3. open scanes and let drain on paper towels or fish rags if your wife let's you. keep in Bait fridge over night.
4. Use Pautzke's Fire Cure in either Pink, Red, Orange or Natural. Follow instructions and put in jars half-gallon my choice. Put back into fridge rotate for two days and fish/catch.

Now I know there are lots of cures but take it from a guy who fish's for a living. There is no better cure for quality and ease of curing out there.

Mid- october Rains mark Start of Fall Chinook Fishing

While we have been fishing for and catching fall Chinooks since the beginning of September on Tillamook and Nehalem bays. This weeks rain has marked the begining of the annual migration for the North Coast Streams.

Nehalem, both North and South Forks, Necanicum and other local steams came up just enough to move early arriving Silvers and Chinooks into the lower reaches of all streams and draw additional numbers into tide water.

Fishing in all atreams will be in full swing from this point forward both bank and boat fishing. Herring, Spinners, Flat Fish, FatSo's, bobbers & eggs/shrimp will all be go to baits.

Remember to not Snag or keep foul hooked salmon. No Wild Coho can be retained and Dark near spawning fish should be released. With that said there will be a large number of Big Bright Fall Chinooks in all locations.

As the season progresses we will keep posting reports and tech tips.
