Catching more Sturgeon

When fishing the lower Columbia for Sturgeon during the months of June & July fishing many days well is just plain easy. No doubt there are plenty of people who do catch alot of fish each and every day. Everyone else does well but just not Slammin the Sturgeon daily like a few boats.

Let's give you a few tips today:

Bait:

Always use preimium bait and use the right bait in the right area. Sandshrimp awesome as everyone knows fish in shallow to mid shallow water. Avoid areas with alot of bullhead and other trash fish.

Anchovies fresh caught the same 24 hours is key keep cold.

Smelt from the columbia river always great.

Squid great with trash fish around and deeper water.

We use alot of fish sauce (in asian food section Safeway) Pautzke's Nectars, Fire Krill and Fire Cure to add to baits when the bite is alittle off or fishing in an area with alot of anglers you want a hot scent working to draw fish to your boat.

Water movement: always look for water movement on either incoming or outgoing where you can fish 3-10 oz of water. This is the ideal that is why you will see a boat who is slamming the fish pick up and move while the bite is still on because they know in a few minutes the bite will move based upon the current changing. Once it slows way down yo should have already moved out and down.

Fish will move with the current feeding the whole way. Also find channels even small ones entering the sand flats to catch fish as the enter and exit the flats at the beginning of water coming up and the end of the water going out. This is a time where large numbers of fish will use these channels to move and you can have some great success. once the tide is moving and the fish spread out on the flat these fish can be anywhere but I like areas where the current pushes them up against real shallow water. they will hold up stack up until the tide gets high enough for them to push on over the real shallow area.

Find areas where they get trapped for a hour and hook as many as you can in a small time frame.

Watch everyone fro the boats who are slamming them and those who are not.

Do not use a Short leader i like 36-48 my self 3/0 gamakatsu 65lb braid by suffix and my reel of choice is Fin-Nor great line capacity and baby butt smooth drags. Quantum 9' rods 15-50.

Call anytime for current conditions, boat availablility and trends.
